'The Mark of Cain' Writer Tony Marchant Takes on Cybercrime in New Series

Britain's Headline Pictures and Germany's Odeon Film are producing the 10-part series

BAFTA-winning TV writer Tony Marchant has signed up with British production company Headline Pictures and Germany's Odeon Film to create an original TV series centered on cybercrime.

The original, as-yet-unnamed, drama is being planned as a 10-part series for television with multi-platform and social media components baked into the concept.

Marchant is a three-time BAFTA winner, with writing credits that include Channel 4's The Mark of Cain (2007) and BBC productions such as the mini-series Holding On (1997) and TV movie Great Expectations (1999).

“I am excited about this project and the range of issues it entails,” said Marchant in a statement. “One cannot help but recognize the relevance of the subject matter simply by watching the news on any given day -- from cyber warfare between governments to data breaches of some of the most recognized brands in the world to the average person being the victim of online phishing expeditions."

The project, which will be shopped to buyers at international TV market MIPCOM in Cannes next week, was announced by Headline Pictures President Stewart Mackinnon, Odeon CEO Mischa Hofmann and Britta Meyermann, Odeon's head of international co-production. Jere Sullivan, vice chairman of international public affairs at communications firm Edelman, will be an executive producer on the project.
