More4 declares Heavy Water War

UK broadcaster Channel 4’s digital channel More4 has picked up the Norwegian Second World War drama Kampen om Tungtvannet (The Heavy Water War) from independent distributor Arrow Films.

MIPTV: UK broadcaster Channel 4’s digital channel More4 has picked up the Norwegian Second World War drama Kampen om Tungtvannet (The Heavy Water War) from independent distributor Arrow Films.

The 6x45’ drama centres on the Nazis’ efforts to develop an atom bomb during the war. Norwegian resistance fighters dramatically prevented this by blowing up a factory producing heavy water – a key component in a nuclear bomb – in 1943.

The €8.7m (US$9.281m) project was coproduced by Norway’s Filmkameratene, Denmark’s Sebasto Film and the UK’s Headline Pictures, together with NRK and Sweden’s SF Film, and was directed by Per Olav Sørensen (The Half Brother). It was also part-financed by the Nordisk Film & TV Fund.

The cast includes Norwegians Espen Kloumann Høiner and Dennis Storhøi, German actor Christoph Bach and the UK’s Anna Friel.

The series premiere attracted more than 1.2 million viewers on public broadcaster NRK1 in January.

The drama has also been sold to the US’s MHZ Networks, Entertainment One in France, Lumiere for Benelux, Spain’s A Contracorriente, Poland’s Kino Swiat and Stas Media for the Balkans. Several further deals are currently under negotiation.

The sabotage of the factory was previously dramatised in 1960s feature film The Heroes of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris.

Kampen om Tungtvannet is due to air on More4 later this year.
