Downton Abbey star Dame Maggie Smith is given aristocratic treatment

Dame Maggie Smith, who plays the imperious Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, is receiving aristocratic treatment on her new film. The 76-year-old actress is shooting Quartet, about a group of former opera singers now living in a retirement home.

Last week, in the grounds of a country house near Maidenhead, in Berkshire, she had to walk towards a gazebo across a piece of particularly rough ground in a wood.

In a move reminiscent of Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his cloak in the path of Elizabeth I, Dustin Hoffman, who is directing the film, gave the go-ahead for a wooden walkway to be built beneath the leaves, so that she did not risk a sprained ankle.
